With the revelations from the NY Times about Donald Trump Jr. and his meeting with a Kremlin-linked Russian lawyer, it's probably time to look back at 45's history with Russia. It's a long and often complicated road, but it's one worth studying, for sure.
- In 1987, in his book "Art of the Deal," Trump talked about wanting to build a hotel "across the street from the Kremlin" with the Soviet government. This never actually happened, but it was only the beginning for the trump and Russia connection.
- In 2008, Trump Jr. spoke at a real-estate conference and was quoted as saying, "Russians make up a pretty disproportionate cross-section of a lot of our assets."
- That same year, a prominent Russian businessman bought Trump's Florida mansion for two times what he'd paid for it in 2004. He get $95 million for it.
- Trump hosted a beauty pageant in Moscow in 2013 and talked about his friendship with Putin. He also boasted on Twitter that "Trump Tower-Moscow" was coming soon.
- A golf journalist says that Eric Trump in2014 stated that credit was hard to come by in the U.S., but that "We have all the funding we need out of Russia." He denies ever having said this.
- Lt. General Michael Flynn got $45,000 from a Russian propaganda outlet after Trump started his campaign. This was for a speech he gave in 2015, where he sat next to Putin.
- Paul Manafort was Trump's campaign manager starting in May of 2016. We now know he got paid over $12 million from a pro-Russia Ukrainian political party between 2012 and 2014.
